Tomato Flowers Browning and Dying – Some Concerns
It was hot this weekend. Very hot. I watered my plants thoroughly before I left, and they held up really nicely – no wilting or anything. However, when I got home from my trip to Baltimore (more on that later this week), I noticed something even more disconcerting. When the temperatures rise above 90 degrees, many plants don’t really like it. A whole bunch of things can happen – lettuces, spinach, and herbs can bolt. Zucchini can drop their flowers (which several of them did, much to my dismay), and tomato pollen can become infertile leading to dry, dead flowers that don’t bear any fruit. The plants on my balcony are large – much larger than many I saw this weekend that were planted directly in the ground at my friend’s house in Baltimore.
