Week 21: They made it through August

| August 26th, 2010 | 1 Comment »

I’ve been updating everyone on the progress of the garden over the past several weeks.  My plants have survived wind, aphids, and extreme heat.  Most of them have made it through August!  I thought a video would be a nice way to show you the progress.  Like last year, now that the extreme heat and sun of August is gone, the tomatoes will likely produce well through October. It was a lovely day today – enjoy this sunset!

Welcome to GitC’s Newest Contributor – Bob Wall

| August 25th, 2010 | No Comments »

Please welcome Bob Wall to Grown in the City.  Bob is a computer programmer, videographer, painter, and lover of life.  Most recently, he’s moved from DC to San Francisco, and started the website ohSanFran, a collection of videos, poems, “happiness projects” and other fun things.  He does a much better job describing it than I do, so go check out the site. From his ohSanFran bio:  “Bob, more often than not, poised patiently behind his Flip, directing nostalgic, even heart stirring, look backs at some of the city’s most endearing residents making good on the everyday simple things that normally feel just okay.” Bob will be producting a series of videos and video interviews focused on urban gardening and other related topics through ohSanFran that will be available exclusively on Grown in the City.  Look out for the first video coming tomorrow.

Makin’ Honey in Chicago

| August 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

This is a great video about Lurie Garden in Chicago’s millennium park. The garden was built on the roof of the parking garage (on what was formerly railyards). The garden has “four season interests” for the bees to keep them around, and the bees produce honey at three hives that the city currently maintains; one on top of city hall, one at gallery 37 and one on top of the Chicago cultural center. Next year the city plans to install hives in the maintenance area of the Lurie Garden so they can bottle their own “Lurie Garden Honey.” This is a great video about Lurie Garden in Chicago’s millennium park. A Video from Chestertown, Maryland’s Farmers Market

| August 23rd, 2010 | 2 Comments »

Earlier this month, I was lucky enough to visit Chestertown, Maryland on the Eastern Shore for a good friend’s wedding.  The morning before the wedding a group of us went to find some breakfast in the historic downtown and stumbled upon a lovely farmers market.  I was capturing some video to edit into the wedding movie I made, so I captured some extra. My favorite interaction was with Aaron Shier from Colchester Farm CSA.  He had a great way of interacting with the customers, and they all seemed to love the produce.  I even learned something from one of the customers (which may be a wives tale, I’m not sure!)  If you put carrot greens out outdoors at a picnic, it will attract flies away from you and the food.  There is something in the carrot greens that will then kill the flies.  Natural pest control!  As I said, it
