Video from This Weekend’s RootingDC Conference
Yesterday was the 4th Annual Rooting DC conference in Washington DC, and based on the turnout, I expect the tradition will continue for many years to come.
As a reminder, here’s the goals the organizers, Katie Rehwaldt and Bea Trickett:
- Build community among groups and individuals who want to improve our city through gardening and greening
- Share information and resources about gardening and greening in DC
- Provide opportunity for DC gardeners to coalesce around specific areas of interest
- Identify volunteer opportunities by creating a database of community based garden projects
- Keep gardeners connected via monthly e-newsletters that highlight volunteer opportunities, events and news from participants
I’d say the first three goals were met by the conference, and we’ll see about the fourth one!
The four sessions I chose were:
- “Puttin’ It Up: Canning for Beginners” with Mo Moodie and Ibti Vincent from Arcadia Center for Sustainable Food an Agriculture;
- “Saving Your Vegetable Seeds,” with Paul Blundell from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange;
- “Creating Community Food Distribution Systems” (it was supposed to be with Tanikka Cunningham from DC Healthy Soulitions, but she was unable to attend); and
- “Case Studies of School Gardens in DC” moderated by Sean Miller, with Lola Bloom and Rebecca Lemos from City Blossoms, Kaifa Anderson-Hall from Washington Youth Garden, Barbara Pervical from Watkins Elementary School, and Rebecca Helgerson from Harriet Tubman Elementary School
The two videos below capture the spirit of the event, which also included a great lunch and info fair. The first video is the shorter version, while the extended version contains longer interview clips.

Hi John! This footage is awesome! Can I crosspost this over at the DC Field to Fork Network blog (of course with a link back here)? Thanks!
Sasha – Please do! There will be more videos coming in the week ahead…I am going to spread it out so I don’t have to write the blog every day! Glad you liked it. The conference was amazing.
