New Video: Composting Update from the Worm Factory 360!

The worms being added to the composter on day 1.

It’s been about 4 weeks since I added worms to the kitchen composter I’m keeping here in my apartment in Washington.  The joy I felt when getting rid of a mound of junk mail, piles of kitchen scraps, morning coffee grounds, and leftover coconut coir from this years’ seed starts  was nothing compared to the lifting the tray this past weekend and seeing a growing colony of worms and dark, rich, organic material!

The compost has another two to three weeks to go before it’s “finished”, but I’ll be out of town on work travel for the next two weeks, so when I get home it should be ready for the garden!  Here’s a video to show how quickly the worms are working through the composting material:

The best part – no smell!  (Unless you consider that rich, earthy “just rained in my garden” scent a bad smell.)  If you’re thinking about getting a composter, check out Grown in the City’s rundown of the different composter models – there’s one for every living situation.

Hey, great video. Who made the background music?

Coincidentally, I just ordered this exact same worm farm as a present to myself for my birthday.

I’m happy to see that you’re having such great results!

  4. Matt – let me know how it works out for you! I am having great fun. Make sure you get red worms and not earth worms though!

The music is by Alexander Ebert – he is the lead singer of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeroes and just released a solo album.

    Cheers!
