In collaboration with key partners across the Chesapeake area, Engaged Community Offshoots, Inc. is organizing and hosting Sowing Seeds Here and Now!: A Chesapeake Area Urban Farming Summit on Friday, June 18th, 2010 from 8:30am-5:30pm. The keynote speaker and inspiration is Will Allen, CEO of Growing Power in Milwaukee, WI. Will Allen is a pioneering urban farmer whose organization Growing Power does exemplary work and who was named a MacArthur “Genius” Fellow in 2008. The goal of the one-day hands-on learning and strategizing event is to catalyze and support urban farming throughout the metropolitan area – Washington, DC, Prince George’s and other local counties, and Baltimore –which we call the Chesapeake area. From Crain’s Business Journal: Crain’s Detroit Business and the University of Michigan-Dearborn are hosting a panel discussion of the business of urban agriculture April 7 at UM-D’s Fairlane Center North facility. Panelists are Patti Cantrell of the Michigan Land Use Institute; Dan Carmody of the Eastern Market Corp.; Al Fields, group executive of planning for Detroit Mayor Dave Bing; Carlton Flakes of the Wayne County Department of Children and Family Services; and John Hantz of Hantz Farms. The breakfast and discussion event begins at 7:30 a.m. Admission is $35 per person. The discussion, moderated by Crain’s Publisher Mary Kramer, will focus on such topics as the cost of entry and the economic benefits to the region, the role local and regional policy plays and relationships between businesses and urban agriculture projects of all size. Kim Hodgson, manager of APA’s Planning and Community Health Research Center, collaborated with the Food Policy Advisory Committee of New Orleans to provide information about the New Orleans Food System for participants of the National Planning Conference.  A similar guide was produced last year for Minneapolis.
